Opening Week Activities

On Monday, January 14, I had the honor of being sworn in as your 39th District State Legislator. It was such a special honor for me to take the oath of office, and I was fortunate to have my family share the moment with me. I also heard outgoing Governor Gregoire give her final state of the state address and Governor Inslee give his inaugural address.

Policy Committees

Most of my time this week has been spent in my committees, where we consider bills and hear from people testifying both in favor and opposed to the proposed legislation. During the 2013 legislative session I will serve on three House committees:

  • the Capital Budget Committee which considers the state capital budget and approves money for the construction and repair of public buildings;
  • the Early Learning and Human Services Committee which considers issues relating to early learning from birth to kindergarten, as well as a broad array of issues affecting children and families; and
  • the Higher Education Committee which considers issues relating to the state's public and independent baccalaureate colleges and universities, public community and technical colleges, and private career schools.

My Legislative Priorities

During this week I've had time to really focus on what my priorities are for the 2013 legislative session. First and foremost, I want to focus on jobs. During my campaign I talked to thousands of 39th District citizens, and this was your biggest concern and the topic I heard most often about. I will work hard to lower taxes so that we can free up our businesses to start hiring again.

Also, because of my background in education, I will be paying close attention to good ideas on how we can improve our education system. I support the House Republican “Fund Education First” solution, which would require the Legislature to pass a separate, stand-alone K-12 education budget first – before any other funds are appropriated for state programs.
