Rep. Scott talks with KTTH about FGM; host calls practice ‘barbaric’

Rep. Elizabeth Scott, R-Monroe, talked about her legislation that would ban a cultural practice that is more prevalent in Washington state than many might believe.  Scott, who has worked internationally, is deeply concerned about female genital mutilation.  She says the World Health Organization and UNICEF have worked for years to eradicate FGM worldwide; and her research shows that there are as many as 25 thousand cases in Washington state, with the majority of them found in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue area.  This is the third year that Scott has brought forth the measure, and over two dozen co-sponsors have signed on to the bill.  Scott is urging supporters to call the legislative hotline at 1-800-562-6000 to express their support of the FGM bill (HB 2685).
